DiningRD: Streamlining Menu and Recipe Workflows with AI
Executive Summary
DiningRD partnered with PlanRight to cut the manual work in recipe and menu management. Together they built AI-assisted workflows for recipe adaptation, menu generation, menu conversion, recipe tagging, and facility menu conversion. Each dietitian now saves about ten hours a week, time that goes back into nutrition review and customer-facing work.
The Challenge
Managing recipes and menus across many facilities is repetitive, detailed work. Adapting a recipe to a diet, building or converting a menu, classifying recipes, and moving a facility's menu data all took dietitian time that could have gone to nutrition and customers. As volume grew, DiningRD wanted to automate the repetitive parts without giving up the professional review its work requires.
Objectives
- 01
Reduce repetitive recipe and menu administration.
- 02
Improve consistency across recipes, menus and classifications.
- 03
Keep dietitians in control of review and final decisions.
- 04
Build workflows that scale with more recipes, menus and facilities.
The Solution
PlanRight built a set of AI-assisted workflows on top of DiningRD's existing recipe and menu data. The system does the first pass of transformation, organization and classification. Dietitians review the result and handle the exceptions.
Recipe Adaptation
Adapts an existing recipe to a diet requirement, such as low sodium or renal, and checks the result against nutrition limits, instead of rebuilding the recipe by hand.
Menu Generation
Builds a draft menu for a facility from its available recipes, budget per resident day, vendor pricing and cuisine rotation, giving dietitians a strong starting point.
Menu Conversion
Converts an existing menu to a single new style, such as Heart Healthy or Italian, swapping dishes while applying DiningRD's dietitian rules for meal composition, soups, breads and variety.
Recipe Tagging
Reads recipe content and applies consistent classifications, making recipes easier to find and reuse.
Facility Menu Conversion
Converts a facility's menu the same way, but for that facility's situation: it stays within the facility's budget per resident day and can mix several styles across one menu, so one facility can rotate cuisines without running separate conversions.
Human Oversight
AI handles the repetitive, time-consuming steps. Every result is checked against DiningRD's rules and then reviewed by a dietitian, who makes the calls that need nutritional judgment. Efficiency went up; oversight stayed where it belongs.
Results
About10 hours
saved per dietitian per week,
roughly 520 hours a year each, redirected to nutrition review, customer support and menu development.
Faster recipe and menu turnaround.
More consistent recipe organization and tagging.
Smoother facility menu conversions.
A foundation for further automation as DiningRD grows.
